Why is Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) stock moving?

Hertz reported Q3 results on Nov 5 that were mixed. Revenue grew about 6% to $2.6B, its best in three years, and adjusted corporate EBITDA rose 15% to $233M. Adjusted EPS of $0.14 missed the $0.25 consensus, and EBITDA fell short of the roughly $285M estimate. Shares fell about 7% after the report, which follows a rally to $2.26 on Nov 4. Operating trends are improving: revenue per day and revenue per unit rose about 5%, core U.S. revenue per day rose about 8%, and liquidity is about $946M. Cost inflation and international softness are weighing on profit. The balance sheet is a concern, with heavy debt and negative equity. Other overhangs are the shareholder class actions, a 56% year-to-date decline, the dilutive offering at $2.70, and short interest reported near 96%. Oro Mobility's $80M investment on Oct 20 gave a brief lift. The stock is volatile and driven by speculation, and the earnings miss may cap near-term gains.
