Why is 3M Company (MMM) stock moving?
3M agreed to pay $7.35 billion over nine years to settle personal-injury claims over PFAS ('forever chemicals') in firefighting foam, covering roughly 115,000-120,000 eligible plaintiffs. It will book a $5.8 billion pre-tax charge (today's value of the payments), excluded from adjusted results. Payments are back-loaded: $50 million in 2026 and most from 2028 to 2033. 3M said the deal does not change its 2026 guidance or its 2027 framework, and the board added $6 billion to its buyback. The stock closed up about 10% at $194.02, a 52-week high, near the top of the day's range.
