Why is Unum Group (UNM) stock moving?

Unum Group (UNM) experienced significant volatility following the release of its Q3 2026 financial results, which showed a GAAP net loss of $419.7 million compared to net income of $39.7 million in Q3 2025. The GAAP loss was driven by $853.0 million in before-tax net investment losses, largely tied to realized impairments on fixed-income assets transferred as part of the newly closed $3.8 billion LTC reinsurance deal with Fortitude Re. Operationally, adjusted operating EPS of $2.20 slightly beat expectations, and core premium income expanded 4.7% constant currency. However, underlying profitability was pressured by a sharp rise in disability claim submissions, particularly in behavioral health, driving group disability benefit ratios to 70.6% from 61.3% a year ago. In response, UNM shares dropped roughly 18% from previous levels above $91 down to approximately $75, as markets digest elevated core underwriting costs alongside long-term strategic LTC de-risking and full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $8.30 to $8.50.
