Stock market today: October 30, 2026

The market today
Big-tech earnings reopened the question of whether huge AI spending will pay off. Alphabet had its worst day in more than 20 years on Thursday. Today Intel (weak forecast) and Amazon (cash burn from AI spending) extended the sell-off.
Sector scoreboard today: semiconductors (SOXX) -7.6%, tech (XLK) -4.5%, communication services (XLC) -0.8%. On the up side: energy (XLE) +1.8%, consumer staples (XLP) +1.5% and healthcare (XLV) +0.9%. The equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP, where every stock counts the same) is only -0.6%, so most of the damage is in a handful of giant tech names.
Oil is high. US crude is around $103 and Brent around $115, because of the Iran conflict and attacks on Gulf refineries. That helps oil companies and hurts fuel-heavy industries like trucking and airlines.
Crypto is also under pressure after a reported $6.3B hack at a major exchange (Coinbase -14%, Strategy -9%).
Coming up: US midterm elections on Tuesday (fuel prices are a political issue), AMD earnings next week and Nvidia in mid-November.
The Daily Standout: Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (REGN) +11.75%
Regeneron is the biggest large-company winner on a day when the Nasdaq is down about 3%. That shows real buying, not a market that is lifting everything. In the first hour it already traded more shares than it does in a normal full day. It broke above its 52-week high to a level not seen since 2024. Unlike yesterday's healthcare winner (Eli Lilly, about 29x expected earnings), Regeneron trades at only about 15x after the jump. So this is strength you are not paying a premium for. The quarter also showed a lasting change, not a one-off: Regeneron now keeps its full share of Dupixent profits from Sanofi, which permanently lifts its revenue base.
A lesser-known healthcare name that beat sales forecasts by ~14% and raised its full-year outlook; the stock is up ~24% to a record, but it is now very stretched.
A quiet 'picks-and-shovels' winner: Veralto raised its profit outlook on demand for water treatment at data centers and factories, and the stock jumped ~9% to a record high.
Exxon beat forecasts because its refineries are earning record profits from war-driven diesel shortages; the whole energy sector is at highs, but the gains depend heavily on geopolitics.
In its first report as a standalone company, FedEx Freight beat forecasts and raised its outlook, sparking a ~14% rebound in a stock that had slid ~40% since its debut.
Intel's worst day in over two years (-29%) after a weak holiday-quarter forecast is dragging down the whole chip sector; it is a washout worth watching, not yet a buy signal.
Amazon's cloud business is growing at its fastest pace in four years, but record AI spending pushed cash flow deeply negative; the stock is now ~5% below where we flagged it yesterday and below its 200-day average.
The most-discussed stock on social media today: Reddit beat forecasts, but warned that Google's AI search answers are sending it far fewer visitors, and the stock fell ~26% to a new 52-week low.
What this analysis couldn't check
Prior-analysis lookup (daily_shortlists, Oct 23-29): only Oct 29 exists. Of today's names, only AMZN was analyzed then (pre-market, before its earnings). It was used as prior context. Every other name is a first-time analysis.
Prices are an intraday snapshot (~10:27 AM ET, one hour into the session). Today's volume figures cover only part of the day, so 'relative volume' understates the full-day number.
The analyst price targets in market data were mostly set before this week's earnings. For several names (REGN, VLTO, XOM) the price is already above the average target, which is likely to move.
Fundamental ratios (growth, margins) partly reflect the prior reported quarter. The latest-quarter figures come from the earnings news cited per ticker.
Some of the market moves (energy, chips) depend on fast-changing geopolitical news.
