The market today
Oil: US crude fell about 6% to below $100 a barrel and Brent to about $106, after Iran's supreme leader approved peace talks. Some analysts warn this could reverse after Tuesday's elections, with Brent possibly heading back toward $120.
Indexes: the S&P 500 is up about 1% after its worst day since June on Friday. The equal-weight S&P 500 (every stock counts the same) is near its 52-week high, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 is still about 8% below its high. Gains are broad, not just in a few giants.
Sector scoreboard this morning: airlines +5.6%, consumer discretionary +3%, materials and industrials +2%. Energy is down about 2% and cybersecurity about 2%. Healthcare is flat but close to its 52-week high.
Coming up: Apple and Palantir report after today's close, AMD tomorrow, midterm elections on Tuesday, and the October jobs report on Friday.
The Daily Standout: IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (IDXX) +16.33%
Most of today's big moves are reactions to headlines: oil falling on peace-talk hopes, or tech bouncing after a bad week. IDEXX is different. It rose on its own numbers. The pet-diagnostics company beat profit forecasts and raised its full-year sales and profit outlook, even though fewer pets are visiting vets. In the first hour it already traded more shares than it normally does in a whole day. In one session the price went from below its 50- and 200-day averages to well above both. It also sits in healthcare, the sector closest to a 52-week high right now. So this is strength in a strong neighborhood, not a lone name. Social media is barely talking about it, which suggests the buying comes from large investors rather than online hype. The catch: after a 16% jump it is short-term stretched, and at about 38 times next year's expected earnings it is far pricier than its animal-health peers.
Marvell confirmed the largest-ever merger between public tech companies, a $115B all-stock purchase of laser maker Lumentum, yet both stocks fell. The market is openly questioning the price.
Oil fell about 6% on Iran peace-talk hopes. United, the strongest of the big US airlines and the one whose outlook assumed very expensive fuel, is leading the group higher.
Apple reports after today's close, the first results under new CEO John Ternus. Investors have used it as a hiding place during the AI sell-off, so tonight tests whether that safety premium is deserved.
Oracle launched a $10B stock sale and a $10B bond sale at once, using in one day the whole outside-funding budget it promised for the next four years. The stock is falling while other cloud giants rise.
SpaceX is up about 5% on reports that it is in talks to buy EchoStar's Boost Mobile, or rent its network, to launch its own phone service. It is bouncing from an eight-month low after a blowout but very costly quarter.
Marriott beat forecasts and sharply raised its full-year outlook on strong US travel demand. It rose about 4% to near its 52-week high, in a hotel group that is already in a solid uptrend.
Check Point's sales slipped and its outlook disappointed, adding to a sharp sell-off in cybersecurity stocks. But buyers cut the opening loss roughly in half, because the stock is cheap for its sector.

What this analysis couldn't check
Prices are an intraday snapshot (about 10:28 AM ET, one hour into the session). Today's volume covers only part of the day, so comparisons with normal full-day volume understate the final number.
Apple reports after today's close. Its scores were set before the results and could become outdated within hours.
The oil drop rests on diplomatic headlines, not on restored oil supply. The election on Tuesday or new attacks on tankers could reverse it quickly, which matters most for United.
Analyst price targets in market data were mostly set before this week's news. IDEXX, Marriott and Apple trade near or above the average target, so those averages are likely to change.
The Marvell-Lumentum deal is not expected to close until the first half of 2028, and regulatory reviews (including outside the US) are still unknown.
Social-attention data mainly reflects retail investor forums. IDEXX, United, Marriott and Check Point get little discussion there, so their sentiment reads lean more on news and analyst tone.
SpaceX has traded publicly only since June, so it has no 200-day average and a short price history for technical signals.
Fundamental ratios (growth, margins, debt) partly reflect the prior reported quarter. The latest-quarter figures come from the news cited for each ticker.
